| Sutton and Cheam Swimming Club's teaching
programme broadly follows the ASA's 'National
Plan for Teaching Swimming' (NPTS) and is designed to provide
a structured progression from 'Learn to Swim' through skill and fitness
development, to competition development. Swimmers progress through
the various levels as they become more proficient. Progression is
based on the attainment of specific skills relating to the aims of
each group.
Boys who can already swim, can usually be fast-tracked into later
stages of the programme (see 'How to
Join').

Learn to Swim'
Our Learn to Swim programme usually starts at around the age of
5 years. We start by introducing non-swimmers to exercises designed
to develop their confidence in the water and move on to using the
arms and legs to achieve propulsion through the water on both the
front and back.

Demand for places is high and parents wishing to place younger
children on our waiting list are encouraged to do so. Places are
offered on a first come, first served basis as they become available.
|
| Improvers 1, 2 & 3
Our improver groups concentrate on progressive skill development
in all four strokes with increasing emphasis on correct technique,
streamlining and breathing. We also introduce diving and turning.
By the end of Improver Group 3, we would normally expect swimmers
to be able to swim 1 length in three of the main strokes (backstroke,
breaststroke and front crawl) with acceptable technique, and to
make a good attempt at swimming butterfly.

Junior Development Squad
Our junior development squad starts the transition to competition,
again concentrating on improving technique and developing endurance
by the use of multi-length drills in all four strokes, and increased
water time.
|
|
|
Junior Gala Squad
Further emphasis is put on competition with developing both endurance
and speed. This phase also places emphasis on racing starts and
turns and introduces our young swimmers to the rules of competition.
This stage also usually gives swimmers their first taste of competition
at club and 'friendly' galas with the emphasis on enjoyment and
improvement. More able swimmers are also given the opportunity to
begin water polo at about 10 years of age.

|
Senior Gala Squad
Concentrates further on skill and fitness development. Land training
is introduced and additional pool time. Gala competitions.

many of whom continue to represent the club in swim competitions
when water polo fixtures allow it.
